Title: Mid-Century Modern Shaker Side Spindle Chair in Solid Oak After George Nakashima for Knoll, USA, c. 1960s
About: This graceful Mid-Century Modern side spindle chair is a refined homage to George Nakashima’s iconic spindle-back designs, produced under license or strong influence for Knoll during the 1960s. Crafted from solid oak (or similar light hardwood) with beautiful natural grain, the chair features a gently curved spindle back, a sculpted seat, and elegant tapered legs that showcase the warmth and organic beauty characteristic of Nakashima’s philosophy of letting the wood speak for itself.
The spindle back is composed of gracefully turned spindles joined into a continuous curved crest rail, creating a light yet supportive silhouette. The seat is subtly contoured for comfort, while the overall proportions strike a perfect balance between minimalist Scandinavian influence and the handcrafted warmth of American studio furniture.
George Nakashima (1905–1990) was one of the most revered American woodworkers of the 20th century. His work emphasized the natural beauty of wood, live edges, and honest joinery. While this chair is an unattributed production piece inspired by his spindle series (rather than a one-off studio piece), it captures the essence of his aesthetic and was popular in mid-century modern homes and Knoll showrooms of the era.
The chair is in very good vintage condition with nice patina to the wood and a sturdy, sound structure. Minor wear consistent with age adds to its authentic character.
Perfect as a dining chair, desk chair, or accent piece in a living room or study. Sold individually or available in sets upon request.
A quietly elegant example of 1960s Mid-Century Modern design that bridges studio craft sensibility with accessible production quality.
