Jens Risom

Jens Risom, born in 1916 in Copenhagen, Denmark, was a pivotal figure in Mid-Century Modern furniture design. A graduate of the Copenhagen School of Industrial Arts and Design, Risom apprenticed under the renowned Danish designer Kaare Klint, which set the stage for his distinguished career.

BRINGING SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN TO AMERICA

Risom moved to the United States in 1939, where he collaborated with Hans Knoll to co-found the Hans Knoll Furniture Company in 1941. His designs introduced the American market to the Scandinavian aesthetic—marked by clean lines, organic forms, and functionality. The Risom Lounge Chair, with its sleek wooden frame and woven cotton webbing, is a prime example of his work.

LASTING IMPACT

Risom's dedication to quality craftsmanship and the use of natural materials like wood, leather, and cotton ensured his designs were both beautiful and durable. His work helped define Mid-Century Modern style and continues to inspire designers today. Many of his pieces remain in production, highlighting their timeless appeal.
