Mid Century Modern in Phoenix, AZ
Like many cities during the postwar boom, Phoenix was an easy selection for young, emerging architects to develop modern neighborhoods. Architects developed residential neighborhoods one by one to provide a new style of living to optimistic American families.
"Haver Hoods" in Phoenix, AZ
A popular architect and developer named Ralph Haver built many new, affordable homes across Phoenix. His neighborhoods quickly dubbed the nickname “Haver Hoods”. With over 20,000 homes developed, Haver Hoods were popular choices amongst growing Phoenix families. Large open floor plans under low sloping roofs bearing bold chimneys make these homes easy to recognize.
Frank Lloyd Wright
Another architect responsible for developing modern structures in Phoenix was the ever so famous, Frank Lloyd Wright. As one of the most recognized names in the Mid-Century Modern movement, Wright did not always associate himself directly with the style. Wright had an earlier start on development in Phoenix than most developers. Taliesin West was Wright’s summer home which blended into the surrounding desert. Located on over 600 acres at the foothills of McDowell Mountains, the home features pyramid shaped stairs that lead into the dwelling. With giant stone walls lined with large windows, the desert becomes integrated with the home. Other famous Phoenix structures Wright erected were the Raymond Carlson house, David Wright house, Norman Lykes house, and the Gammage Auditorium. Each designed with modern techniques, organic aesthetics, and functional floor plans, these structures remain as landmarks to Mid-Century design.
Art & Architecture
The Art & Architecture magazine’s famous mid-century case study provided Phoenix with Case Study Apartment #1. Architect Al Beadle built the only case study project in Arizona. With post and beam construction, this project used modern materials and design to build a multi-family unit. Each apartment had a living room, kitchen, bath, and personal patio. Communal laundry and parking areas were available. Displaying beautiful landscaping and lighting in the common areas, this was a remarkable unit.
Modern Phoenix Week
The residents of Phoenix surely appreciate the Mid-Century Modern style. Every year, in March, there is a dedicated week called Modern Phoenix Week. During this week, enthusiasts can tour the modern buildings of Phoenix and learn more about the designers and architects who built them.
