The formation of American Industrial Designer, George Mulhauser - Education and Early Career

George Mulhauser (1916-2002) was an American industrial designer best known for his work in the mid-20th century, particularly for his collaboration with the furniture manufacturer Plycraft. Born in Kansas, Mulhauser attended the Pratt Institute in New York City where he studied industrial design. After graduation, he worked for various design firms, including Norman Bel Geddes Associates and the Museum of Modern Art.

Collaboration with Plycraft and Iconic Designs

In 1953, Mulhauser joined Plycraft, a furniture company based in Lawrence, Massachusetts, as their chief designer. It was during his time at Plycraft that Mulhauser created some of his most iconic designs, including the Mr. Chair and Mrs. Chair. These chairs were groundbreaking in their use of molded plywood and featured organic curves and angles that were both visually striking and comfortable to sit in.

Influence on Mid-Century Modern Design and Recognition

Mulhauser's designs for Plycraft were highly influential in the mid-century modern design movement and helped to popularize the use of molded plywood in furniture. His work was featured in a number of exhibitions, including the 1958 Brussels World's Fair, and he received several design awards throughout his career.

Later Career and Teaching

After leaving Plycraft in 1968, Mulhauser continued to work as an industrial designer, creating products for companies such as Herman Miller and Steuben Glass. He also taught design at the University of Bridgeport and the Pratt Institute.
