Collection: Arne Vodder
Arne Vodder was a Danish furniture designer born in 1926 who transformed the Mid-Century Modern design movement in his lifetime. He was trained by Finn Juhl who would fastly become a friend and business partner. Like many designers of the time, Vodder had experience in architecture. He would partner with Anton Borg to design and build 1,100 low cost homes. While successful at building structures, Vodder was a wonderful furniture designer drawing attention for his creations that included soft lines and functional design. Vodder produced all types of furniture including chairs, tables, and desks. While not as well-known as some other of his contemporary designers, he was recognized internationally.
Many biographers and scholars argue that Vodder is not as well-known due to the timing of his career. When Vodder emerged into the Mid-Century Modern design movement, it was already established. He was not a pioneer of the movement, but he represented it very well and thus his work can be found in many prestigious places. President Jimmy Carter took notice of Vodder's line and added several pieces to the White House. It is common to find Vodder's furniture in hotels, banks, and embassies across the world. Like Arne Hovmand-Olsen, Vodder loved to use teak and rosewood. One of his most popular pieces was his chaise lounge. This beautiful chaise lounge sat on a teak frame and had woven patent leather as the seat with a wooden tray. Another notable piece was the iconic sideboard. The sideboard featured beveled drawers that did not require handles. Vodder partnered with several furniture manufacturers including Cadovius, Nielaus, Erik Jorgensen, Fritz Hansen, Sibast, and Kircordan.
