About: Designed in 1966 for Knoll’s groundbreaking Outdoor Collection, the 1966 Lounge Seating series—often simply called the “1966 Collection”—was Richard Schultz’s answer to creating elegant, weather-resistant furniture that could live comfortably outdoors without sacrificing the refinement of indoor modern design.
This armless version is the rarer, more architectural sibling to the better-known armed lounge chair. Its clean white powder-coated aluminum frame is exceptionally resilient to sun, salt air, wind and rain—exactly why these pieces have endured in Miami Beach, Palm Springs and coastal modernist homes for nearly sixty years. The signature vinyl-coated mesh seat and back provide excellent airflow and keep the sitter cool even in direct sunlight, while the taut, sculptural lines remain unmistakably mid-century.
The example we offer is an authentic period production chair (not a later re-issue) that has developed a slight, even patina and light discoloration to the mesh over decades of honest use. The discoloration is tasteful and consistent across the seat and back; no tears, holes or sagging. The frame is structurally sound with no bends, cracks or weld failures—ready for decades more enjoyment in a garden, terrace, poolside, sunroom or covered porch.
One of the most enduring and collectible outdoor designs of the twentieth century, the 1966 Collection is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum.

Condition Details: This elegant armless lounge chair is in 100% original, vintage condition. The upholstery does show some signs of wear including areas of discoloration as well as two small burns (all of which can be seen clearly in the detail photos provided). With that said, the seat and back have no rips or major damage the affect the functionality of the seat itself.
The aluminum frame, painted in off-white is in very good condition showing only minor scuffs and light scratches and showing no gouges, stains or other damage.
This exceptional lounge chair is very comfortable, structurally sound and ready for decades more of use.
