About: Mid-Century Modern leather sling lounge chair and ottoman designed by Don Shoemaker in solid cocobolo rosewood manufactured by Senal S.A., Mexico. This sculptural set features flowing rosewood grains and contrasting wood joinery. Equipped with folding arms and an adjustable seat that includes four settings. A showcase piece from all angles and retains the original black leather sling with beautifully aged patina.

After studying design in the 1930s at the Art Institute of Chicago, Shoemaker married and subsequently on honeymoon, fell in love with Mexico. He loved the country so much that later in the 1940s, he moved to Mexico with his wife. The Shoemakers lived and painted in a town called Santa Maria de Guido, overseeing the City of Morelia in Michoacán.

It was here that Shoemaker became inspired by the tropical woods of Mexico and began to manufacture furniture from these precious timbers. What began as a small factory in the late 1950s became known as Señal S.A. and grew to more than a hundred skilled artisans in its employee. The furniture designed for Shoemaker were modern interpretations of traditional Mexican furnishings. Many of his iconic designs were inspired by traditional Mexican woodwork and have been well received amongst a host of Modern Art Museums across the globe.

Condition Details: This rare lounge chair and ottoman set is in 100% original, vintage condition and has aged to perfection! The solid cocobolo rosewood composition is in remarkably excellent shape given its age showing only light nicks and a few scratches where the rocker mechanism has rubbed against the inside wooden frame (which can be seen in the detail photos provided) but showing no stains or other damage whatsoever and the variegated woodgrains are absolutely mesmerizing in natural light.

The leather shows only minor signs of vintage wear such as minor discoloration and slight fraying in a few areas which can be seen in the detail photos provided. With that said the leather is still in overall very good original condition and is weight bearing.
