The Siesta Chair has become one of the most recognizable and exalted Scandinavian furniture designs of the entire Mid-Century Modern Design era. The frame is constructed of bent and laminated beech wood harvested from sustainable forests and stained rosewood. The original leather, in a rich mocha color, adds warmth and character with it's light patina familiar to something utilized and loved. With it's matching ottoman, featuring a newly upholstered cushion with nearly indiscernible from the original, this chair is as comfortable as it is aesthetically captivating.
Norwegian-born architect and designer Ingmar Relling is known as one of Norway’s most internationally recognized and revered designers and is considered a major player in the Scandinavian Mid-Century Modern design movement. In 1965, Relling, in collaboration with his son Knut Relling, designed the Siesta Chair winning him first prize by the Industry Council for Furniture that same year. Relling was passionate about creating furniture that was ergonomic and eco-friendly, ensuring that his pieces were constructed in way that could be repaired.
Notably, President Jimmy Carter purchased sixteen Siesta Chairs to furnish the White House during his term. In 1992, the Siesta was awarded the Classic Award for Design Excellence by the Norwegian Design Council. Today, the chair is produced by the Norwegian furniture manufacturer L.K. Hjelle. It is considered a Scandinavian design classic, and an icon of Norwegian design.

Condition Details: This iconic "Siesta" Chair and Ottoman, designed by the influential Igmar Relling, has recently undergone a partial restoration. The lounge chair itself is in 100% original, vintage condition and has aged to perfection. The beech bentwood frame, stained by the factory to resemble rosewood, shows only minor signs of vintage wear such as nicks, surfaces scratches mostly relegated to the legs and feet and can be seen in the photos provided. The leather too shows signs of vintage wear such as minor fraying on the arms and signs patina which only adds to the character of this archetypal Norwegian chair. The canvas on the backside of the backrest shows minor fading and can also be seen in the detail photos provided.
The ottoman features new genuine leather nearly indistinguishable from that of the lounge chair and has been sewn in accordance with the original design. The bentwood frame of the ottoman is in 100% original vintage condition and shows the same minor signs of vintage wear as the lounge chair with minor nicks and scratches mostly relegated to the legs and feet.
