Title: Mid-Century Modern Expansion Dining Table w/ Matching Chairs in Walnut by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb, USA, c. 1950's
About: Introducing a rare expansion dining table with matching dining chairs in walnut by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb, crafted in the 1950s in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This impressive dining set, in stunning original condition, is constructed from a mix of solid and veneered walnut showcasing the natural beauty of the woodgrain and unique coloration. Expanding to a total length 98.5" via a clever series of mechanical cogs (as seen in the photos provided) this gorgeous table can easily accommodate up to ten guests.
The dining chairs feature sculptural backs which add a touch of elegance to the design, while the tapered legs add a sense of lightness and airiness. The seats have been redone in a rich dark green velvet perfectly offsetting the rich woodgrains of the solid walnut frames.
English born T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings is perhaps one of the most influential and noteworthy designers working in the U.S. during the mid-century period. By the 1930s and 1940s he was arguably the most important decorator in America. After opening a shop on New York's Madison Avenue in 1936, Robsjohn-Gibbings proceeded to design houses from coast to coast for such scions as tobacco heiress Doris Duke, publisher Alfred A. Knopf, and socialite Thelma Chrysler Foy.
The design work of T. H. Robsjohn Gibbings is hallmarked as a modern mixture of the classical elements of Ancient Grecian design and Art Deco design. It often features mosaic floor reproductions, sculptural fragments, and sparse furnishings, all combining to achieve his trademark brand of modern historicism. Taking inspiration from Scandinavian Modern design he worked as a designer for the Widdicomb Furniture Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan from 1943 to 1956.
The renowned Widdicomb Furniture Co. was founded in 1858 when George Widdicomb started a cabinet shop in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His four sons went into business with him and the company was named George Widdicomb & Sons, all four sons would serve in the American Civil War. The Widdicomb company would continue producing pieces until 2002 and collaborated with an impressive array of designers such as T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings and George Nakashima.
This expansion dining set is a true collector's item, perfect for those who appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of Mid-Century Modern furniture as a whole and the timeless works of Robsjohn-Gibbings himself.
