Title: Bauhaus Mid-Century Modern Five-Tier Bookshelf Etagere in Chrome & Beech by Marcel Breuer, Italy, c. 1980s
About: Introducing an icon of Bauhaus Design - the Five Tier Bookcase by Marcel Breuer. This fabulous etagere represents one of the most anomalous designs in Breuer's linguistic research. The tubular steel is discontinuous and touches the ground with two molded ends, cut and closed with a disk surmounting the section. The shelves are constructed from molded beech plywood and are replete with stellar variegated woodgrains perfectly offsetting the chrome uprights. All shelves are adjustable adding to the versatility of this archetypally utilitarian piece.
Designed in 1930, this 5-tier bookshelf was originally produced in Switzerland in 1930 and sold in Zurich and Basel in the modern furniture stores owned by Sigfried Gideon, Werner Moser, and Rudolf Graber. In 1933, it was included in the collection designed by Breuer for Wohnbedarf. Production was moved to Italy in the 1980's making this iconic etagere one of the longest, continually produced pieces of the Bauhaus design era.
Marcel Breuer is considered one of the fathers of Modernism. During his career, he was an architect, teacher and furniture designer. As a student and teacher at the Bauhaus School, Breuer focused on the integration of technology, materials, and art. Breuer is famous for a number of furniture designs, though perhaps no chair design is more famous than his Wassily Chair. Designed in 1925, the Wassily chair was the first bent-tubular steel-framed chair. The chair is very simple in form, yet quite comfortable and exemplary in its use of the Bauhaus design philosophy. In the 1930s, Breuer fled from Germany to England and eventually came to the United States where he taught with Walter Gropius at Harvard's School of Architecture.
With it's stylish mix of organic and chrome materials, adjustable shelves and instantly recognizable stance this archetypal paradigm of Bauhaus design is ideal for collectors and designers alike searching for an authentic Breuer piece. Able to blend seamlessly against a myriad of design backdrops from Contemporary to Minimalism to Mid-Century Modern and everything in between this "Open" bookshelf is perfect in both office and home settings even doubling as a clean room divider. Make it yours today before it's gone forever.
