Title: Rare Pair (2) of Restored Stokke "Stick" Chairs in Suede & Rosewood by Jens H. Quistgaard for Nissen Langaa, Denmark, c. 1960s
About: Rare and timeless, these ‘Stick’ easy chairs, designed in 1966 by Jens Harald Quistgaard and produced by Richard Nissen Langaa, showcase masterful Scandinavian minimalism. The chairs derive their name from the distinctive Brazilian rosewood "sticks" that form their elegant frames. This design, known as the Stick or ‘Stokke’ chair, has garnered admiration since its debut for its simple yet ingenious design. The Stokke (stick) Armchair draws inspiration from colonial safari chairs, which were known for their collapsible and portable nature. This chair is held together without screws, brackets, or joints, relying instead on internal tension. The tapered wooden poles slot into metal bars, and the seat and backrest lock the structure together, allowing tool-free assembly in minutes, like the safari chairs of old.
Recently and painstakingly restored this set is ideal for collectors and designers alike searching for a set of Stokke chairs that are ready for a literal lifetime more of use. The solid rosewood frames have been hand-sanded and refinished and they feature a beautiful grain coloration and pattern. The curved metal connectors that link the rosewood sticks have been sand-blasted and powder coated. The seats and backrests have been re-upholstered in an authentic Italian suede leather hide nearly indistinguishable from the original material, enhancing the chair’s vintage appeal.
Jens Harald Quistgaard was a Danish sculptor and designer, known principally for his work for the American company Dansk Designs, where he was chief designer from 1954 for the following three decades. Though a sculptor and grounded in traditional handicrafts, he quickly established a career as an industrial designer. From the mid-1950s his tableware and kitchenware designs became synonymous with Scandinavian modern and found their way into millions of homes in the US, Europe and Japan. Many of Jens Quistgaard's works are still produced today.
Incredibly rare, meticulously restored and instantly recognizable this stunning set of Stokke "Stick" Chairs is ready for a literal lifetime more of use and can blend seamlessly against a myriad of design backdrops from Danish Modern to Minimalism to Scandinavian Modern and everything in between. Very few of these Stokke chairs were ever produced and fewer still are currently available for sale in North America. Make these iconic "Stick" chairs yours today before they're gone forever.
