Title: Mid-Century Scandinavian Modern Lounge Chair w/ Matching Ottoman in Leather by Fredrik A. Kayser for Vatne Møbler, Norway, c. 1960s
About: Introducing a rare and iconic low-profile recliner with matching ottoman designed by the influential Fredrik A. Kayser for the lauded Vatne Møbler. Designed and produced in the late 1960's this high-back lounger is the epitome of Scandinavian Modern Design. Able to reline, with a fully-functioning adjuster lever, as well as swivel 360 degrees via a heavy-duty, hand-welded steel frame this chair was built for comfort. The matching ottoman only adds to the incredible comfort contained of the timeless design.
Fredrik A. Kayser is a well-loved furniture designer from the Scandinavian Design period of the mid-twentieth century. Fredrik began his carpentry apprenticeship right after the middle school exam. At the age of 15, he had already drawn his first dining room, which was put into production at Viken Møbelfabrikk. Kayser got his diploma at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry in Oslo in 1945, the same year he started his career at the Rastad & Relling Tegnekontor.
Kayser's furniture is characterized by elegant design and material sensitivity, with a rare sense of proportions and composition. In his most famous design, “Krysset”, the front and back legs are fixed together by four wood nails that in a refined way emphasize the construction. Kayser was inspired by the trends of the time, but always managed to give his creations a unique personal touch, with elegance that made them instant classics.
Though the body of the chair remains in original, patinaed condition the seat and back cushions have been painstakingly re-upholstered in a new leather hide almost indistinguishable from the original. The original down feather cushions have been re-packed adding to the unrivaled comfort and sink that this chair was made famous for. With its timeless, low-profile design, out-of-this-world comfort and rich use of natural materials such as thick-cut leather and solid Brazilian rosewood this ultra-rare set won't last long. Make them yours today before they're gone forever.
