Title: Set of Two ( 2 ) Mid-Century Modern Art Deco Three-Tiered Glass End Tables by Gilbert Rohde for Herman Miller, USA, c. 1930s
About: Introducing an ultra-rare set of three-tiered end tables designed by the influential Gilbert Rohde for Herman Miller. Designed and crafted in the late 1930s this set represents the zenith of Rohde's American Modernist movement and influence within the Herman Miller design leadership. Featuring two solid, thick-cut glass table tops in graduated form and supported by solid walnut uprights this set harkens back to the pre-war era when Modernist designs were emerging from the drab, austere depression-influenced furniture that dominated the 30's.
Beginning in 1932, and continuing up to the time of his death in 1944, Rohde advised Herman Miller's president, Dirk Jan De Pree on design, marketing, and production. Herman Miller was one of a dozen furniture manufacturers where Rohde initiated modern design, among them the Heywood-Wakefield Company and the Widdicomb Company both of which would become paragons of American Mid-Century Modern design and production.
Herman Miller was founded in 1905 as the Star Furniture Co. Initially the company produced furniture, especially bedroom suites, in historic revival styles. The company reformed as Herman Miller, Inc. in 1960 and was then led by architect George Nelson, who joined the firm as director of design in 1945. Over the next four decades, Nelson influenced Herman Miller through both his personal designs and the designers that he recruited, including Isamu Noguchi and Charles and Ray Eames.
Ideal for collectors and designers alike this stunning set of architecturally fascinating end tables can blend seamlessly against a multitude of design backdrops from Mid-Century Modern to Art Deco to Post Modern and everything in between. With exceptionally few of these tables produced due to the war time halt on domestic furniture production, this set is among very, very few available for sale anywhere in the western hemisphere. Make them yours today before they're truly gone forever.
