Mid Century Modern in Miami

It is no surprise that a beautiful place like Miami would be filled with Mid-Century Modern designs. Miami’s Post War flair is often called Miami Modernism or MiMo.  In the heart of Miami, it is easy to find relics of the Mid-Century Modern movement. Heading down Biscayne Boulevard, you will enter the MiMo district. Some people refer to the Biscayne area of Miami as MiMo on BiBo. The region strongly preserves the 1950’s aesthetic. Retro beach resorts such as the Fontainebleau, Di Lido, and Eden Roc are icons of the MiMo style.  The first major MiMo remodel was the Vagabond hotel. The hotel maintained the original look, keeping its retro lobby, glowing sign, and trendy furniture, but adding modern technology one would expect to find in today’s state-of-the-art hotels. Painted in cool colors of white and turquoise, geometric shapes garnish the building and pool area, placing the occupant back into time.

Showrooms and shops such as Glo, Vermillion 20th Century Furnishings, and Select Modern provide countless opportunities to own one of the simplistic yet trendy works of art.  Not only is there a possibility to shop for these items in high end boutiques, but Miami also offers the famed event, Art Basel. Art Basel is an international art fair that is staged in Miami Beach, Florida; Basel, Switzerland; and Hong Kong. The Miami event has hosted over 81,000 visitors and collectors. People flock to this event to view galleries, collections and hear artists, collectors and critics speak about modern art. As expected, the event is loaded with Mid-Century design.

Mid Century Modern Buildings in Miami

The city embraces the style so much that it has over 250 Mid-Century Modern buildings that are protected against demolition. Buildings built during the postwar housing boom often mixed exterior textures such as brick and stucco. Bright colors, sloping lines, and surprising angles made these homes unique and exciting. Luckily, with help of many artists, architects, and designers, the Miami MiMo district has been revamped and a sense of inspiration and optimism has leaked back into the neighborhood.
