Title: Set of Two (2) Scandinavian Mid-Century Modern "Siesta" Chairs in Leather by Igmar Relling for Westnofa, Norway, c. 1970's
About: Introducing a rare set of matching "Siesta" Chairs featuring new leather upholstery.
The "Siesta" chair has become one of the most recognizable and exalted Scandinavian furniture designs of the entire Mid-Century Modern Design era. The frame is constructed of bent and laminated beech wood harvested from sustainable forests and stained teak. The newly upholstered leather cushions, in a rich tobacco color, add warmth and character and have been hand-stitched in exact accordance with the original layout making this set ideal for both collectors and designers alike.
Norwegian-born architect and designer Ingmar Relling is known as one of Norway’s most internationally recognized and revered designers and is considered a major player in the Scandinavian Mid-Century Modern design movement. In 1965, Relling, in collaboration with his son Knut Relling, designed the Siesta Chair winning him first prize by the Industry Council for Furniture that same year. Relling was passionate about creating furniture that was ergonomic and eco-friendly, ensuring that his pieces were constructed in way that could be repaired.
Notably, President Jimmy Carter purchased sixteen Siesta Chairs to furnish the White House during his term. In 1992, the Siesta was awarded the Classic Award for Design Excellence by the Norwegian Design Council. Today, the chair is produced by the Norwegian furniture manufacturer L.K. Hjelle. It is considered a Scandinavian design classic, and an icon of Norwegian design.
This set of Siesta Chairs are a true collector's item, perfect for those who appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of Relling himself and authentic Scandinavian Modern furniture. With their unique beech bentwood construction, new Italian leather cushions, and timeless design, these early Siesta chairs are sure to make a statement in any living or office space.
