This sculptural chair features flowing rosewood grains and contrasting wood joinery as well as newly re-upholstered leather hand-stitched in exact accordance with the original design and scheme. After studying design in the 1930s at the Art Institute of Chicago, Shoemaker married and subsequently on honeymoon, fell in love with Mexico. He loved the country so much that later in the 1940s, he moved to Mexico with his wife. The Shoemakers lived and painted in a town called Santa Maria de Guido, overseeing the City of Morelia in Michoacán.
It was here that Shoemaker became inspired by the tropical woods of Mexico and began to manufacture furniture from these precious timbers. What began as a small factory in the late 1950s became known as Señal S.A. and grew to more than a hundred skilled artisans in its employee. The furniture designed for Shoemaker were modern interpretations of traditional Mexican furnishings. Many of his iconic designs were inspired by traditional Mexican woodwork and have been well received amongst a host of Modern Art Museums across the globe.

Condition Details: This extraordinary "Sloucher" chair has recently undergone a complete, exhaustive restoration process and the results speak for themselves. The solid cocobolo rosewood frame and legs have been hand-sanded and re-finished showing only minor scratches (shown in the detail photos provided) and joint repairs but showing no stains, cracks or other damage whatsoever.
The seat and backrest feature new Italian thick-cut, top-quality leather and the back conforms to the sitters' back and the seat is adjustable extending to a depth of 25" when fully extended and 19" when placed all the way inward.
These magnificent "sloucher" chair is comfortable, structurally solid and ready for a lifetime more of use thanks to it's recent restoration process.
