Jens Risom

Jens Risom, born in 1916 in Copenhagen, Denmark, played a pivotal role in shaping Mid-Century Modern furniture design. After studying at the Copenhagen School of Industrial Arts and Design, Risom apprenticed under the renowned Danish designer Kaare Klint, which set the foundation for his distinguished career. In 1939, Risom moved to the United States, where he partnered with Hans Knoll to co-found the Hans Knoll Furniture Company in 1941. His designs introduced the American market to the Scandinavian aesthetic, which emphasized clean lines, organic forms, and functionality. The Risom Lounge Chair, with its sleek wooden frame and woven cotton webbing, exemplifies his minimalist and functional style.

Risom’s commitment to craftsmanship and the use of natural materials, such as wood, leather, and cotton, ensured that his furniture was both beautiful and durable. His designs helped define the Mid-Century Modern style and continue to inspire contemporary designers. Many of his pieces are still in production today, demonstrating their lasting appeal and relevance in modern interiors.
