Herman Miller

Herman Miller is a well-known furniture manufacturing company based out of Zeeland, Michigan. In 1905, the company began as Star Furniture Co. but was renamed Michigan Star Furniture Co. in 1919. Dirk Jan De Pree was a diligent worker within the company and eventually became its President. With help of De Pree's father in law, Herman Miller, 51% of the stock was purchased putting De Pree in control. In 1923 De Pree renamed the company Herman Miller Furniture Co because he was so grateful for his father in law’s contributions. Many years later, the company would simply be named Herman Miller Inc.

Due to the Great Depression, people were not interested in purchasing the wooden furniture the company once produced. Herman Miller Furniture Co would have to seek a different direction to survive in a difficult time. Gilbert Rohde was hired by the company to design new products to revive the business. Rohde was a modern furniture designer who boasted Herman Miller's new furniture at the Century of Progress exhibition. Soon, the company would start to produce modern office furniture.

Unfortunately, in 1944 Rhode passed away and was replaced by the great George Nelson. With a background in architecture and design, Nelson called upon some of the greatest designers to once again reform the furniture line. Ray and Charles Eames, Noguchi, and Propst were among the Mid-Century Modern experts that would help design and produce some of the most iconic furniture to date. The Marshmallow Sofa, Eames Lounge Chair, and Noguchi table were some of the great pieces that Herman Miller made available to the world. With beautiful geometric shapes and the lack of harsh lines, the furniture was elegant and desired. In 1961, De Pree would fall ill and retire from his position as CEO from Herman Miller Inc. His son would take over as the company’s CEO and continue operations until 1989. Still in business today, you can find products beyond the Marshmallow Sofa. Herman Miller Inc. offers residential, commercial and industrial furniture options. Herman Miller has an immensely popular line in the healthcare field.
