Collection: France and Sons
France and Sons is a Danish manufacturing firm responsible for producing many Mid-Century Modern and Danish Modern pieces of furniture. The company was founded in part by Charles France from England and Eric Daverkosen of Denmark. Although the company was rich with modern designers and particularly important to the Mid-Century Modern movement, some of its history is vague. It is assumed the company started in 1948. France specialized in business while Daverkosen specialized in cabinetry. The first products manufactured by France & Daverkosen were mattresses, but it would not be long before the focus switched to mass production of furniture. Because the furniture was mass produced, a lot of the artisanal details were left out. Cushions would be made separate from the furniture and would be a more simple, lighter design compared to bulkier items of the past. In 1957, the son of Charles France would join the company meriting a name change to France and Sons. It is unclear as to why Daverkosen left the partnership at that time, but furniture was still being manufactured with the FD stamp placed before the serial number.
The company was purchased in the mid-1960s by Poul Cadovius. Cadovius changed the name of the company to CADO and continued to assemble the same lines of furniture that France and Sons had produced as well as adding a few more. Some notable designers whose work was produced by CADO were Verner Panton, Finn Juhl, and Arne Vodder. Juhl's Model 133 Spadestolen Chair was the crown jewel of Mid-Century Modern mass production design. This defines a time where teak wood could be manipulated by large manufacturing processes. CADO closed in the late 1970s but is still considered one of the greatest furniture manufacturers of all time. Furniture was distributed all over the world and can still be found in impeccable condition. Many will argue that some of the highest quality mass produced furniture came from France and Sons or CADO.
