Collection: Charles Eames
Mid-Century Modern furniture designer, Charles Eames, was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1907. While studying at Washington University in St. Louis, Eames was interested in engineering and architecture. Although Eames was a scholarship student, he was kicked out of the university for supporting the controversial Frank Lloyd Wright. Because of his great eye for design and willingness to push the limits, Eames was asked to become head of the design department for the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan.
In 1941, Charles married Ray Kaiser and they moved to California. At the time, Ray was most interested in fashion design and painting. Ray and Charles Eames began experimenting with furniture design in the extra bedroom of their apartment. They would learn to manipulate and mold plywood to create modern shapes. Because of their collaboration and ingenuity, they created a chair that had a separate seat and back that could be easily mass produced. Charles and Ray would soon become requested by the Navy to make supplies during World War II.
Shortly after, the talented couple would start designing and building their popular Eames chair which would be labeled “The Chair of the Century”. Mass production in the United States began with Herman Miller, Inc while European production was handled by Vitra International. In 1946 Ray and Charles Eames built a home as part of a study sponsored by Arts and Architecture magazine. The goal was to design a home that included industrial materials in a residential development. Many designers, architects, and fans still visit this historical landmark because it is considered one of the most influential homes built after World War II. The United States Postal Service has even honored the couple by dedicating stamps to them. The legacy of Charles and Ray Eames will live on for many decades thanks to eye for timeless and functional designs. Their designs are still relevant and sought after today.
