Title: Set of Four (4) Dining Chairs by Norman Cherner for Plycraft in Teal Fabric, USA, c. 1964
About: A pioneer both in molded plywood and prefab housing, Norman Cherner studied and taught at the Columbia University Fine Arts Department and was an instructor at the Museum of Modern Art in New York from 1947 to 1949. Yet Cherner is best known for the molded plywood seating line he created for Plycraft, a manufacturing company based in Lawrence, Massachusetts. The "Cherner Chair" as it has been called is the pinnacle of Cherner's design career and perhaps the best representation of American Mid-Century Minimalism. These chairs are the epitome of functional art and have been rarely seen outside of galleries, museums and the living rooms of a few lucky collectors. Constructed of molded walnut in a stunning shape with mesmerizing wood grain veneers these chairs are an absolute show-stopper in any space. Condition Details: This set of iconic dining chairs has recently undergone a partial restoration. The walnut frames have received a few minor repairs to the veneer which can be seen in the photos provided. With that said, the wood is in overall very good condition showing, aside from the aforementioned veneer repairs, only minor nicks and surface scratches. The original vinyl fabric, in a fabulous teal blue, does show some tears and minor tears which can be seen in the photos provided. Our vision with this exceptional set was to leave them in as close to original condition as possible, but if you're interested in re-upholstery please message us prior to checkout to discuss your options.
