Collection: Lawrence Peabody

Lawrence Peabody, often called Larry, was an American designer and architect. Born in 1929, Peabody was a native to Harverhill, Massachusetts. As a young child, he would frequent antique stores and gain an eye for high quality furniture and their designs. He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and later moved to Denmark to study at the famed Royal Academy of Fine Arts. As many designers did of the time, Peabody indulged in the modernistic approach, creating furniture with smooth lines, geometric shapes, and functional uses. Teak, walnut and even wicker were popular materials used in Peabody's furniture.

In 1955, Peabody moved back to the United States to settle in Boston where he opened his own design firm, Lawrence Peabody and Associates. Peabody would work with many recognized names such as Sears & Roebuck and Kohler. Not only did Peabody design beautiful furniture, he designed many hotels. To escape Boston's cold winter months, Peabody ventured to Haiti where he would he begin work at Le Centre D'Art. His friend DeWitt Peters and himself allowed local Hatians to attend art classes and helped display their work in galleries. Knowing most of the local Haitians were in need, they created an artistic outlet for them that brought them income.

With a collaboration of his own modernistic style and the style of the Haitians, his designs are long living testaments for quality art. With his own interest and with local help, Peabody designed many hotels in the Carribean. Because of his sharp eye for detail, it is no surprise he daunted the nickname "Eagle Eye". A wonderful artist and businessman, his dedication to the craft was unsurpassed. As successful as he was in his business, he was also successful in his personal world. He was said to have been a happy being with a longing to help others. Unfortunately, Peabody passed away in 2002 but his legacy and products live on.
