Collection: Milo Baughman
The Californian Milo Baughman was born in 1923. Growing up in Long Beach, Baughman helped his parents design their home at the youthful age of 13. A few years later and during World War II, he enlisted in the military where he helped design officers' clubs. When Baughman returned from his duty, he began his studies in architectural design. At the young age of 24, Baughman opened Milo Baughman Design, Inc. Collaborating with designer Greta Magnusson Grossman and Pacific Iron, Baughman began producing functional, modern furniture with materials such as leather, glass, and stainless steel. With the combinations of these teams of great designers, the Californian Modern movement began.
Across the country in North Carolina, manufacturer Thayer Coggin picked up Baughman’s designs and began to mass produce them. Because of this collaboration, Americans could readily possess modern, unique furniture for a great price. Some of these great pieces included nontraditional, rounded 825 Design sectional sofas. Other great pieces from Baughman's line include the stunning 989 cube lounge chair. Daunting a geometrically square, metal frame and a plush cushion seat, this was one of the most popular items produced. Baughman has a taste of his own but heavily nodded to Danish designers. He has his own interpretations of Danish Modern furniture such as the womb chair and several lounge chairs. A devout Mormon, Baughman helped establish the environmental design department at Brigham Young University. He frequently taught lectures and offered insight to many upcoming designers. Baughman passed away in 2003 but his timeless furniture can still be purchased from Thayer Coggin.
